Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds, 9 p.m. Saturday at Castaways: The soul revival is alive, kicking and coming to Ithaca in full force as Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds take to the stage this Saturday evening at Castaway's. The powerful nine-piece is fronted by the lusty and soulful Arleigh Kincheloe (Sister Sparrow). The mighty Dirty Birds complement the vocalist with hard-driving brass grooves and melodies that are sure to push the bluesy soul and spirit of the night to new heights.

Immediately following their winter 2010 debut release, they were invited to open for prolific bands in the rhythm scene, including The Black Keys, The Neville Brothers and Dr. John. Don’t fret if you miss this performance; Sister Sparrow is making an appearance at this summer’s Gathering of the Vibes music festival. — Justin Zupnick

CAGE is a diverse and eclectic composite of eight musicians, many whom teach in Cornell’s Department of Music. The ensemble is constantly pushing the boundaries of rhythmic pattern, timbral definition, and harmonic spectrum. CAGE performs free-form improvisation through a creative and astonishing arrangement of instruments — from Javanese rebab to Turkish oud, experimental friction instruments to bowed guitar, various electronics to no-input mixing of effects upon effects. These melodies collide in perplexing ways that are sure to lead your ears to discover invigorating new sounds you never thought you would enjoy. — Justin Zupnick
