Advertising

• Run day-to-day advertising operations
• Establish advertising rates for daily publication, Eclipse, the Freshman Issue, holiday & seasonal supplements, and insertions
• Work with owners and managers of local businesses and university organizations
• Interact with contacts from National Advertising Agencies
• Perform daily tasks: ad layout, sales calls, production report
• Establish contracts with returning and potential customers
• In charge of special supplements
• Conduct sales calls and business visits
• Write all promotional and sales letters and emails for university, local, and national advertisers
• Negotiate and sign contracts with returning and potential customers
• Liaise with the Marketing Department to coordinate promotional activities, advertising supplements and other special features

Online Advertising

• Responsible for the day-to-day management of The Cornell Daily Sun’s rapidly growing online advertising operations
• Generate rates for online display and classifieds advertising
• Develop online rates and contracts for all new initiatives with outside online business partners
• Generate new ideas to grow The Sun’s online advertising business
• Help develop, maintain, and promote The Sun’s Online Classified System
• Identify potential display and classified advertisers for The Sun’s online edition
• Build and maintain relationships with current and potential customers
• Conduct sales calls and draft promotional letters
• Liaise with the Marketing Department to promote online advertising opportunities and new editorial features including blogs and video content
• Liaise with Web department about expanding online features to accommodate advertisers and increase online readership

Marketing Department

• In charge of promoting The Sun’s image (emails, posters, promotions, tables, etc.)
• Monitor daily circulation of The Sun and manage the allocation of papers to the various distribution locations
• Ensure that all major publications (supplements, special issues) are properly advertised in advance in The Sun and throughout campus and College Town (promos, posters, letters, etc.)
• Create readership surveys and use the results to inform other editors and managers about changes to be made to individual sections and the paper as a whole
• Work on recruitment for The Sun, specifically the Business Board
• Market The Sun building as a venue for speakers, events, etc.
• Event coordination for The Sun’s social and professional networking events throughout the year in Ithaca and New York City
• Compile and send out The Sun’s weekly newsletter to Cornell Clubs and university outposts around the world

Social Media Department

• The Social Media Department extends The Sun’s influence as a center of campus dialogue, and strengthens the connection with our readership by developing and overseeing a wide array of interactive media operations.
